Sydney continues in top 100 in THE World University Rankings 2025

Industry and research quality strongest performers
The University of Sydney continues to rank in the top 100 in the Times Higher Education World University 2025 rankings.

The University ranked 61st in the world in the prestigious rankings and strengthened its global performance in industry, research quality and teaching. 

Domestically the University continues to be the highest ranked institution in NSW and third-highest ranked in Australia and New Zealand.

The University ranked 68th globally for industry with a score, out of 100, of 99.5 (up 21 places from last year) and 83rd for research quality with a score of 92.1 (up nine places). 

In the 21st year of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings more than 2000 universities were ranked from 115 countries and regions. The global rankings assess research-intensive universities across 18 performance indicators grouped into five pillars: teaching, research quality, research environment, international outlook and industry. 

“I congratulate all our staff on our continuing success in these rankings, including our improved performance for research quality, teaching and industry. I especially note our outstanding performance in the industry pillar this year, a direct reflection of our strong collaboration with industry partners and the relevance of our research to new patents,” said Professor Mark Scott, Vice-Chancellor and President.

Professor Emma Johnston, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) said: “It is gratifying that the University continues to perform so strongly across the research quality, research environment and industry pillars of this ranking. We continue to score in the top 60 internationally for research environment. The research quality pillar considers measures of research strength, excellence and impact, and citation impact, and our performance recognises the global significance and influence of the outstanding work we do.”

This year the University ranked 18th in the world and 2nd in Australia in the 2025 QS World University Rankings including being placed first in Australia and 7th globally for sustainability as part of that ranking. 

In the latest US News Best Global Universities Ranking the University was placed 29 globally and 2nd in Australia.
