Incident on campus: statement

15 October 2024
University of Sydney statement following an incident on our Darlington campus this morning.

Emergency services and hazmat personnel attended a chemical incident on our Darlington Campus this morning, near the Sydney Uni Sports and Aquatic Centre (G09).

An exclusion zone was set up and we asked our community to avoid the area around Codrington Street and Butlin Avenue while the incident was underway.

The Services Building (G12) was temporarily evacuated as a precautionary measure. There were no other disruptions to University activities.

We’re grateful there do not seem to have been serious injuries as a result, however ambulance services were on campus and appropriate healthcare provided to the small number we're aware of who required it.

If any of our community were in the vicinity of the Sydney Uni Sports and Aquatic Centre and Services Building locations this morning, and are suffering from any of the following symptoms, or think they were exposed to any chemicals, we urge them to please seek immediate medical advice:

  • Itchiness to skin/eyes
  • Irritation to respiratory tract

Health Direct has a symptom checker on its website and provides 24-hour medical support by calling 1800 022 222.

We also request anyone seeking medical advice related to this incident to contact Protective Services via operations.controller@sydney.edu.au or 02 9351 3333.

There is no ongoing safety or security risk to our community.

A full investigation into what took place will occur in due course, and we'll continue cooperating with the appropriate authorities as required.
