More than just a campus

Whether you’re looking to develop your professional or academic career, we have something unique to offer, as an institution ranked among the best by academics and employers around the world.

What I love about working at the University

Staff share their thoughts

At the core of our 2016-20 Strategic Plan is our commitment to attracting and welcoming the brightest academics whatever their social or cultural background – and we invite you to join us.

We are proud of our position as a leading research and teaching university, and the contribution to cultural, social and intellectual life we’ve made during the last 160 years.

The University of Sydney supports the research of more than 3500 academic staff across one of the broadest ranges of disciplines in Australia. The most recent Excellence in Research initiative announced that the University of Sydney scored well above the world average, with a maximum score of five across a wide spectrum of academic disciplines.

Our staff and students have joined us from all corners of the world. We reach across multidisciplinary barriers to find unique solutions to improve and transform lives and the environment in which we live. We enjoy a true sense of community and belonging, stimulating scholarly exchange and the opportunity to engage in world-class research.

We value open minds, avid curiosity and a readiness to take on the big questions. We encourage vigorous debate, and we believe differing perspectives can make good ideas great.

Join an environment where big ideas matter. You’ll also benefit from strong links across our and the wider community, all working together to support projects of real importance.

We value flexibility, balance and security. We give you the freedom and room to explore, believing that people achieve the most when their curiosity is encouraged. We understand your need to fulfil your potential. At every level, it’s what life at the University of Sydney is all about.

We offer great incentives, including outstanding superannuation and leave options, beautiful surrounds, and support for your career.

We work with a number of organisations who supply goods and services for the University. Any external contractors or suppliers will need to contact the Procurement Services department for information on how to manage the quote and tendering process on behalf of the University.

It is important to note that all communications from the University in relation to procurement and finance will be from an email address at the domain ‘sydney.edu.au’. Variations on this domain are not valid University of Sydney emails. Please be aware of fraudulent emails asking for money or goods on behalf of the University.

The Disability Action Plan outlines our commitment to disability inclusion and providing a barrier-free workplace for our staff with a disability.

Disability funding and workplace adjustments

We have established the Disability Support Fund, a centrally managed fund, to provide financial support for workplace adjustments. We offer support with the use of assistive technology at work, flexible working arrangements, workplace assessments and confidential advice on requesting and implementing workplace adjustments. We can also provide modifications to the built environment if required.

The University is committed to increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our workforce and enhancing future employment opportunities for Indigenous staff and students. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Workforce Strategic Framework 2019-21 (pdf, 1.08MB) enhances our workforce diversity and improves the services we deliver for recruitment, retention and career development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
