At the China Studies Centre, we have a community of students and researchers engaged in multidisciplinary research on China.
Student Xuanzi Xu's research focuses on China’s social media and its impact on Chinese society. "With the emergence of China as an international power, I think China studies could contribute to help us better understand not only China but the rest of the world."
Historian Dr Sophie Loy-Wilson is researching the history of the overseas Chinese diaspora in Australia and the Asia Pacific, with a particular focus on the history of immigration restriction regimes and Chinese indentured labour schemes. There are current moves within the Chinese Australian community to advocate for an apology from the Australian government for Chinese Australian treatment under the White Australia Policy and I believe my work moves us closer to this goal.
Student Weijie Hu is a PhD candidate. His research examines urbanisation policies in China through the case study of urbanisation and public rental housing in Chongqing, with a focus on rural migrants' quality of life. "The issues of contemporary Chinese cities are so great and complicated that individuals often feel too powerless to make any changes."
David Fitzsimmons' research is around further analysing the decisive economic and security dimensions of the Sino-Australian relationship over the last forty-five years. "It is my ambition to understand Chinese history, Chinese language and Chinese culture better so I can become a living bridge between these two great nations."
