The project's aim is to propose efficient aggregation of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) to enable their participation in system support by providing ancillary services. DERs, including distributed generation, responsive loads and energy storage, including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, offer significant opportunities due to their technical capabilities, degree of flexibility and the communication infrastructure, including smart meters, that is currently being rolled out. In order to seize this opportunity, one needs to integrate numerous DERs into one single virtual power plant. Such approach will augment existing demand-side management, facilitate integration of distributed generation, enable new business models, and increase energy efficiency.
