Subdivided electrodes to improve defibrillators and physiological measurements

Summary

Current defibrillators and physiological monitors (EEG, ECG etc) are limited by variations in contact impedance. This makes measurements difficult during movement of the subject or the electrodes – for example when performing CPR during emergency resuscitation.

Supervisor

Professor Alistair McEwan.

Research location

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Program type

Masters/PHD

Synopsis

In this project the student will be required to develop a range of electrodes that will allow contact impedance monitoring and test their ability to reduce this problem with electronic feedback. Analogue, digital or mixed signal electronics will be used and novel materials investigated for electrode type.  The scope may include testing electrodes in animal and human measurements.
