There are currently a range of tools (i.e. questionnaires, scales, diagnostic assessments etc.) available for research in people who have substance use disorders. However, sometimes tools are used that have been developed or validated in other populations and we need to determine whether these tools are fit for purpose in a substance use population. Furthermore, some tools that have been developed specifically for people with substance use disorder require further evaluation. Therefore, the aim of this research project is to review the available tools used to assess a range of factors relating to substance use disorder (e.g., screening, substance use, treatment efficacy) and evaluate which should be recommended for future use. There will also be the opportunity to develop and evaluate new tools should the review demonstrate better options are required. The project will inform clinical research data collection across a network of public drug and alcohol services and has the potential to directly influence practice and research translation.
