I am a cultural studies scholar trained in literary and media studies. My work examines the social impact of popular culture on changing notions of race and gender. I focus in particular on media representations of East Asian and Asian diasporic identities and communities in Australia and the United States.
My first book, Yellow Future: Oriental Style in Hollywood Cinema (Minnesota University Press, 2010) explored how East Asia became more visible in Hollywood films, from the 1980s to the 2000s, with the economic rise of Japan, China and the NICs and the global appeal of popular culture from this region. I am currently working on two research projects: 1. conducting research for an ARC Discovery Project, “The Practices and Ideologies of Anti-racism in Australia,” examining how anti-racist discourse and policy are being deployed and implemented in cultural and community sectors, and 2. writing a book on the role of compassion in creating inclusive communities within and outside the classroom. My research on film, media, and pedagogy has been published in a wide range of journals including Cultural Studies, World Literature Today, Inter-Asia Cultural Studies and Educational Philosophy and Theory as well as anthologies such as Pop Empires: Diasporic and Transnational Flows of India and Korea, Mixed Race Hollywood and East Main Street: Asian American Popular Culture.
