Developing Novel Biotherapeutics and Vaccines

Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated candidate who has a background in pharmacy, chemistry, chemical engineering or an allied subject to work on the development, synthesis, stabilization, and formulation of biotherapeutics and vaccines. The project is highly interdisciplinary and available for a suitably qualified candidate with a good honours or masters degree to start immediately leading to a PhD in Pharmacy. It involves the use of numerous biophysical methods in order to understand and therein gain insight to enhance the stability of biotherapeutics and vaccines. In addition, it requires working on the development of novel approaches to study different aspects of the sample with an emphasis on degradation issues during processing steps.

Supervisor

Associate Professor Veysel Kayser.

Research location

Sydney Pharmacy School

Program type

PHD

Synopsis

The research will span both fundamental, applied research and process development on a broad range of characterization, formulation and degradation issues including but not limited to study - overall stability of the protein/vaccine and structure of the protein/virus, protein aggregation, particle size, surfactant-protein/virus interactions, degradation mechanism of the biotherapeutic/vaccine by surfactants and temperature, and finding appropriate stabilizers. The candidate will have a rare opportunity to work in an academic environment, which collaborates closely with pharmaceutical companies with an aim to streamline biotherapeutics/vaccine manufacturing.

Additional information

Applicants should have an interest in biotechnology and biophysics and experience in hands on laboratory work using biophysical methods such as light scattering and fluorescence spectroscopy, electron and optical microscopy, chromatographic methods such as SEC-HPLC, and being able to use data analysis software such as MATLAB or Igor Pro would be an added benefit. We seek a candidate who is independent and self-motivated, yet still able to work as part of a team. The candidate should be able to demonstrate very strong interpersonal and communication skills. Further information can be obtained from A/Prof. V. Kayser, Faculty of Pharmacy, The University of Sydney NSW 2006 (Phone: 61 2 9351 3391; E-mail:veysel.kayser@sydney.edu.au). Applications should include a CV, a copy of an academic transcript(s), and the names and contact details of at least two referees.
