Fluorescent sensing arrays to study metal ions in the environment

Summary

This project involves developing new methods to detect and measure metal ions from complex solutions such as river and blood.

Supervisor

Associate Professor Elizabeth New.

Research location

School of Chemistry

Program type

Masters/PHD

Synopsis

Waterways in the environment, and body fluids, contain mixtures of many metal ions, so it is difficult to selectively measure one metal ion. There is therefore a challenge in measuring the levels of heavy metals in waterways, where they are pollutants, or in the body, where they are toxins. In this project, we are developing new methods for studying heavy metals in the environment, by developing fluorescent sensing arrays.

Additional information

This project will involve organic synthesis, spectroscopic studies, and data analysis involving statistical software. Interested candidates must have strong research experience in synthetic chemistry and analytical chemistry.
