The modes of granular segregation

Summary

Granular segregation will be studied using dynamic X-ray tomography. This will be a pioneering study into the fundamental mechanisms underlying the phenomenon of segregation.

Supervisor

Dr Benjy Marks.

Research location

Civil Engineering

Program type

Masters/PHD

Synopsis

Granular segregation is a ubiquitous issue, affecting many industrial processes, and occurring in almost every geophyiscal flow. This project will develop high resolution X-ray experiments in several geometries to further our understanding of the underlying processes involved in segregation. This information will be used to develop higher dimensional continuum theories to replicate the behaviour, and facilitate predictions in other geometries.
