The aim of this project is to investigate the extent of upper limb hypermobility in a range of orchestral musicians of different levels of expertise, and to determine the associate of pain and musical performance with their extent of hypermobility.

Synopsis

Anecdotally, musicians exhibit a higher extent of upper limb joint hypermobility than the general population. This hypermobility in certain joints can be advantageous for musical performance, however excessive mobility may compromise their health and career. To date, no upper limb specific hypermobility measures have been undertaken in musicians and therefore the association of this with pain and performance has not been established.
