The aim of this project is to provide new experimental data of the mechanics of the compaction process using photographic techniques and other instrumentation.

Dynamic compaction is a widely used soil improvement technique that involves the dropping of large weights onto the soil, or the towing of “square” rolling compactors. The success of dynamic compaction depends on soil type, moisture content, compaction energy, but the depth and extent of the soil improvement is often difficult to predict. Results of experiments will be compared with the predictions of dynamic, large displacement finite element analysis.
