Synopsis

Many scientific communities such as Life Sciences and Bioinformatics are producing enormous amounts of data which they need to share and process efficiently. Modern database systems provide extensible and algorithmic functionality such as the possibility to extend DBMSs with new specialised datatypes, and to implement algorithms and searches inside database systems as “stored procedures”. This project will investigate ways to use these features to support the particular needs of different scientific data domains. We have already several students investigating the use of in-DBMS processing for particular algorithms commonly used with bioinformatics data such as gene sequences.
