Synopsis

The classical differential equations describing the motion of a rigid body go back to Euler. The modern point of view in Geometric Mechanics describes them using fibre bundles. The bundle picture is particularly useful for non-rigid body dynamics, where the shape is the base, and the orientation the fibre. Recently a beautiful mathematical theory has been developed in order to explain a surprising phenomenon: The change of overall orientation without angular momentum, used, e.g., by a falling cat. This theory has not been explored in the context of biomechanics and this interdiciplinary projects aims to study its implications in collaboration with the School of Exercise and Sport Science and the New South Wales Institute of Sports.
