System reliability based design for locally unstable steel structures

Summary

The topic of this project is to develop a reliability-based design guideline for thin-walled steel structures through a statistical framework and advanced nonlinear finite element analyses which consider the effect of cross-sectional instability.

Synopsis

Thin-walled steel structures are becoming widely used. A need has emerged for developing guidelines for the design of locally unstable steel structures. A statistical approach will be used to implement geometric imperfections in shell-element-based inelastic geometric nonlinear finite element analysis. A design guideline will be developed based on system reliability of the structures.
