About Dr Julie Mooney-Somers

Seeking to understand and address avoidable health differences that put socially disadvantaged people and communities at further disadvantage.

My research program focuses on equity in health and health services for LGBTI people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, young people and women. My work seeks to understand and address avoidable health differences that put socially disadvantaged people and communities at further disadvantage. I have a particular focus on stigmatised conditions such as infectious diseases related to sexual practice and drug use.

My research approach often employs qualitative, community-based or participatory methodologies that allow me to work in partnership with communities, non-governmental organisations and not-for-profits (like ACON Health and Family Planning NSW) to conduct and translate research to reduce health disadvantages.

I'm a Non-Executive Director of ACON Health (New South Wales's leading health promotion organisation specialising in HIV prevention, HIV support and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex health). In partnership with ACON Health, colleague Rachel Deacon and I run the SWASH lesbian, bisexual and queer women's health survey (running biennially since 1996).

Current projects include:
Lesbian, bisexual and queer women's health survey
Tobacco-control project targeting lesbians, bisexual and queer women
Research ethics
Chlamydia Management
Bacterial Vaginosis

Check out my research projects page for more information on these and past projects.

My research supervision covers the range from honours to PhD. I'm open to discuss supervision at all levels as long as they are in my areas of research. I'm currently supervising higher degree research students in hepatitis C care, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce and education, lesbian and bisexual women's smoking cessation, models of health care in the Torres Strait, and social media and adolescent development.
