About Professor Dong Xu

Professor Xu's research interests include computer vision, machine learning and multimedia content analysis.

Professor Xu and his research group has developed new machine learning methods for various computer vision and big data analytics related applications including Internet vision and social media (i.e., large scale image/video retrieval, image and video analysis using massive Web data), video analysis, biometrics (i.e., face and human gait recognition) and medical image analysis. He has had 60 papers published in IEEE Transactions including T-PAMI, T-IP, T-NNLS/TNN, T-MM, T-SMC-B/T-CYB, T-KDE, T-CSVT and T-BME. His publications have been cited more than 6700 times in Google Scholar. His T-PAMI 2007 paper on the graph embedding framework has received more than 1500 citations in Google Scholar. His current research focuses on domain adaptation (also called transfer learning) for vision applications. Domain adaptation was initially studied in natural language processing and machine learning, but attracted little attention from computer vision researchers. His group is one of the earliest groups to study domain adaptation for real-world vision applications. Currently, his group is still one of the most active research groups working on this direction. Dr Xu also enjoys application-oriented research and he has close collaboration with many multi-national IT companies. Moreover, Dr Xu has also collaborated with clinic doctors for interdisciplinary research and his group has developed new medical image analysis techniques for intelligent glaucoma diagnosis.

Professor Xu is on the editorial boards of T-PAMI, T-NNLS and T-CSVT. He has also served as a guest editor of the special issues in IJCV, T-CYB, ACM TOMM, T-CSVT, CVIU and IEEE Multimedia. Moreover, he has served as a program co-chair of IEEE ICME 2014, a program co-chair of PCM 2012 and an area chair of CVPR 2012. One of his co-authored works (together with his former Ph.D. student Lixin Duan) won the Best Student Paper Award in IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR 2010). His co-authored work (together with his former Ph.D. student Lin Chen) also won the Prize Paper Award in IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (T-MM) in 2014. Moreover, the Ph.D. students Yi Huang and Lixin Duan in his research group were awarded the Microsoft Research Asia Fellowship Awards in 2008 and 2009, respectively.
