About Professor Tim Bedding

Stars are wonderful laboratories for studying the physics of matter under extreme conditions. In particular, measuring their oscillation frequencies allows us to probe their interiors in exquisite detail and test our theories of stellar structure and evolution.

Tim Bedding is an astronomer specializing in high-precision observations of stars. In particular, he is a world leader in asteroseismology, the study of stellar oscillations.

Tim Bedding is a world expert in asteroseismology, the study of stellar oscillations.  He leads a group that made the first clear detection of oscillations in a Sun-like star by using some of the world’s biggest and most advanced telescopes. The group is involved in several international projects, including a world-wide network of telescopes to study oscillating stars, as well as NASA’s Kepler mission, which will measure oscillations in thousands of stars using a dedicated space telescope.
