Biographical details

Dr Anna Ceguerra worked as an application developer at IBM Australia for four years, before undertaking a PhD in Microscopy & Microanalysis under the Faculty of Science, The University of Sydney. Upon completing her PhD in 2011, she joined the Australian Centre for Microscopy & Microanalysis in the Faculty of Engineering & Information Technologies as a Research Associate. In the second half of 2012 she fulfilled the role of Project Officer for the Materials and Structures Research Cluster in the Faculty of Engineering and IT. In 2017 she was the Domain Leader for Materials on the Nanoscale at Sydney Nano.

Research interests

The atoms in a single gram of solid material can be configured in more ways than there are atoms in the known universe. Dr Anna Ceguerra's research explores how atoms are arranged within a particular material, and the properties that result. This knowledge can then be applied to develop new, better materials for enhanced applications, such as stronger steels and alloys for buildings and cars, and faster semiconductors for computers.

"The technologies now available to society are very advanced, but we can do even better. Selecting the appropriate material for an application is critical. Designing new materials can enable enhanced applications and even new technologies.

"Individual atoms might seem too small to make a difference in a material, but when enough atoms are related to each other in a certain way, they have a big impact on the final properties of the material.

"I got into the field of materials engineering for a reason: to develop new technology that is suited to its purpose but is also socially and environmentally ethical and sustainable.

"I find this research exciting. Even now, after 10 years of working in this field, I am still finding out something new and I am still finding that the technique needs to develop further.

"What also excites me is the use of computer science, mathematics and microscopy as a powerful combination to help answer materials engineering questions.

"I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Sydney in 2001, and returned in 2006 to pursue my PhD. I've been at the University since then.

"The research environment here is excellent. We have state-of-the-art facilities, great support for our research and amazing people to work with. I count myself lucky to work in an environment that allows me to flourish and to pursue my research and career goals."
