Benefits

For students taking undergraduate non-award units of study, either 50 or 100% of the tuition fees for the specified units of study for a recipient enrolled in non-award studies.

You will be advised in your scholarship offer letter whether your scholarship covers 50 or 100% of your tuition fees, this will be determined based on the level of financial disadvantage demonstrated.

Who's eligible

You must:

  • be an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent residents
  • be a full-fee paying commencing, or continuing student
  • demonstrate significant ongoing financial hardship
  • be enrolled in undergraduate non-award units of study within the Faculty of Science¬†
  • be completing your HSC or equivalent and have demonstrated outstanding academic results within science disciplines.

1. Background

a. Established in 2018, this Scholarship provides support to students enrolled in the Faculty of Science who demonstrate financial hardship.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be domestic (Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents) full-fee paying commencing or continuing students enrolled in undergraduate non-award units of study within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

b. Students enrolled in non-award study must also be currently completing their HSC or equivalent and have demonstrated outstanding academic results within science disciplines.

c. Applicants must be able to demonstrate significant ongoing financial hardship.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,

II. supporting documentation and a personal statement which provides evidence of significant ongoing financial hardship and any other relevant hardship, and

III. a personal statement which outlines the impact of the financial and other hardship circumstances, and how the Scholarship will assist the applicant achieve their educational goals.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Science, or their nominated delegate.

4. Value

a. The Value awarded is either 50% or 100% of the tuition fees for the specified units of study for a recipient enrolled in non-award studies, as stated in the Scholarship letter of offer. Partial of full coverage is provided based on the level of financial disadvantage demonstrated.

b. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Dean of the Faculty of Science, or their nominee, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university.

c. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

d. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. Recipients enrolled in non-award studies must successfully pass their relevant units of study. 

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from any nominated units of study,

II. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance or complete academic requirements,

III. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

IV. is awarded an alternative primary scholarship. In such circumstances this scholarship will be terminated in favour of the alternative scholarship where the alternative scholarship is of higher value,

V. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or

VI. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.
