Who's eligible

You must:

  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • enrol full-time in an undergraduate, combined or double degree in the Faculty of Science
  • have completed the NSW HSC or, equivalent interstate or international qualification in the year of application
  • have achieved a minimum ATAR of 95.00 or equivalent.

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit, personal attributes such as leadership, creativity and self-motivation, as well as involvement in science-related activities during high school.

Established in 2010, this scholarship provides financial support for commencing undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

1. Background

a. Established in 2010, this Scholarship provides financial support for commencing undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

b. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents who:

i. Will enrol full-time in an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney, and

ii. Have completed the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or equivalent in the year immediately prior to commencement of their undergraduate degree.

b. Students who enrol full-time in an undergraduate combined or double degree program in the Faculty of Science are also eligible.

c. Applicants must have applied for the Sydney Scholars Award and achieved an ATAR or equivalent of at least 95.00.

c. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit, personal attributes such as leadership, creativity and self-motivation, as well as involvement in science-related activities during high school.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee nominated by the Dean of Science.

2. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $5,000 and is tenable for one year only.

b. The amount will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.

c. This scholarship may be deferred for up to one year, provided the recipient does not undertake tertiary study at another institution during that time.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

3. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum Semester Annual Mark (SAM) of 75 each semester.

b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

4. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

i. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

ii. commences part-time study without prior approval,

iii. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

iv. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

v. is awarded an alternative scholarship administered by the University of Sydney on the basis of general academic merit (see 6.b. and 6.c.); in such circumstances, this Scholarship will be terminated in favour of the alternative scholarship where the alternative scholarship is of equal or higher value,

vi. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or

vii. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. For the purposes of 6(a)(v), an alternative scholarship includes:

i. the Chancellor’s Award,

ii. the Sydney Scholars Award (including for hardship),

iii. the Sir Lionel Hooke Scholarship,

iv. the Science Alumni Entry Scholarship,

v. the James Strong – Rip Curl Undergraduate Scholarship,

vi. the William McIlrath Rural Scholarship, and

vii. the Farrand Scholarship.

c. As an exception to 6.a.v., the following Scholarships may be held concurrently with this Scholarship:

i. the Faculty of Science Olympiad Scholarship,

ii. the Science Top of the State Scholarship, and

iii. the Liversidge Scholarship

d. Notwithstanding 6.a.v., the Dean of Science, or their nominee, may permit an applicant to concurrently hold an alternative scholarship of equal or higher value awarded on the basis of hardship or equity alongside this Scholarship.

e. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

f. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or withdraws from the relevant course, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
