Biographical details

Abdul Kareem obtained his BSc in Botany and Masters in Biotechnology from the University of Calicut and Kannur University, India respectively. He then moved to Kalika Prasad laboratory at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Thiruvananthapuram for his Doctoral research. As a first graduate student of Kalika Prasad laboratory, he investigated the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying plant regeneration. On completion of his PhD, he moved to Australia as a postdoctoral research associate in the laboratory of Marcus Heisler at the University of Sydney.

Research interests

Kareem is a developmental biologist interested in cell polarity and patterning. He uses Arabidopsis thaliana as a model system to address how cell polarity is coordinated in plants to develop well-defined complex structures of tissues and organs.
