Biographical details

Dr Angela Pattison is a plant breeder and agricultural scientist. Her current role is research and pre-breeding chickpea for heat tolerance as part of the ‘Legumes for Sustainable Agriculture’ hub, funded by an ARC linkage grant, and developing tools to achieve this including the use of UAVs, molecular markers, and diverse chickpeas from around the world. She is also involved in paddock to plate devlopment of grains for food, particularly non-wheat cereals; field pea breeding and research, and the potential of Australian native species for food, fuel and fibre production in environmentally and socially beneficial systems.

Angela's interest in working with, or within, the natural environment has led to language and/or cultural competancy training with Aboriginal people from two different nations, and supervision of masters and honours students on native food projects. Current projects seek to document the partnership between food, science and culture for Aboriginal people.

Her previous role was manager of the Narrabri node of the Managed Environment Facility (MEF), which is a multi-site GRDC project investigating drought and heat tolerance in cereals. The MEF is concerned with methods plants use to maintain growth during water-stress, with the aim of releasing high yielding lines which cope well in both drought and average seasons.

Angela completed her Bachelor of Agricultural Science with Honours in 2006, majoring in agronomy and plant breeding, and conducted research projects into native foods, mycorrhizal associations and triticale quality. After working for a year in the University’s triticale breeding program, which included training at CIMMYT (Ciudad Obregon, Mexico), she commenced her PhD based at the Plant Breeding Institute, Cobbitty, NSW, in 2007. Her research aimed to define the current suitability of triticale for processed food products, and to use modern genetic techniques to improve flour quality in triticale.

Angela conducted extensive breeding trials in multiple environments around NSW. Her research included genetic mapping, chromosomal translocations from bread wheat and interspecies crossing between durum and rye. She was awarded a Commercialisation Training Scheme Scholarship in 2009 to study the commercialisation of scientific research outputs, and completed her Graduate Certificate in Innovation and Enterprise in 2011. In 2012 she was awarded an Endeavour Scholarship for exchange to the USA, investigating greenhouse gas emissions in rice production at UC Davis and wheat breeding at Texas A&M University. She has also worked part time in Science Communications, and continues to invest in community and student education through supervision of students, trainees, casuals and speaking in public forums.
