Biographical details

Dr Auriol Purdie holds a BSc (Molecular Genetics) from Kings College (London, UK), a MSc and DipLSHTM Immunology of Infection Disease from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (London, UK) and a Doctorate of Medicine and Therapeutics looking at the immunomodulatory effects of the antibiotics Ciprofloxacin and Moxifloxacin on healthy humans from the University of Aberdeen (Aberdeen, UK). Following on from her PhD, Auriol completed two Postdoctoral Fellowships at the Roslin Institute (Edinburgh, UK) where she carried out research examining the pathogenesis of bovine spongiform encephalopathy using gene expression techniques and research and development to manufacture therapeutic proteins from the eggs of transgenic chickens utilising cloning and proteomic techniques. Since joining the University of Sydney School of Veterinary Science in 2009, this expertise has been applied to examining the pathogenomics of Johne’s disease, a chronic mycobacterial disease that affects sheep and cattle and the results have enabled insight to the disease model, identification of novel disease mechanisms and biomarkers. Recent projects include examining the resilience to endemic diseases in livestock, exploring the concept of immune fitness as a measure of animal welfare and development of a novel vaccine strategies.

Research interests

Auriol’s research focus stems from an observation formulated during her PhD that nothing in the living body functions as a singularity and thus to gain a understanding of the workings of the living body in terms of the complexity of the immune system and its reaction to external insult, it is useful to apply modified inductive reasoning techniques to achieve research outcomes in relation to pathogenomics. This paradigm is taken further to analyse not only the immune related interplay between the host and pathogen interactions in the pre-clinical stages of disease but also to probe the relationship of the immune system in response to pathogens or other insults such as animal welfare related stress responses to the livestock production process. In recent years this interest has grown to include the relatively new field of macrovesicle and exosome research which may enable insights to understanding cell-to-cell communication and the spread of disease within a host, leading to better vaccine formulations and biomarker discovery.

Auriol has a keen interest in increasing the number and diversity of students in STEM through mentorship and education.
