Biographical details

Edward Jones is a Research Fellow in the Sydney Institute of Agriculture with a specialisation in soil spectroscopy. Edward graduated BScAgr (Hons I & Medal) from the University of Sydney in 2012, following research into the stabilisation of organic particles on soil mineral surfaces. He worked for eighteen months as a visiting researcher at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Colombia, where he developed software for use in climate change adaptation strategies. He returned to the University of Sydney to complete his PhD titled ‘Proximal sensing in soil profiles’. Edward is a member of the Sydney Institute of Agriculture and the Precision Agriculture Laboratory.

Research interests

Edward is passionate about soil science and its importance in agricultural and environmental applications. He works tirelessly to make the provision of soil information rapid, inexpensive and accessible to all. His current research focusses on real-time, adaptive mapping of soil properties using proximal sensors - visible near-infrared (VisNIR) and portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy. This high-resolution soil information will provide insight into production capacity for precision agriculture purposes, as well as the identification and remediation of soil constraints
