Dr Hannah Sassi

Biographical details

Hannah is a postdoctoral research associate in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences with a specialisation in environmental microbiology and virology. Her background is focused in public health and microbiology. She graduated from the University of Arizona in 2016 with her PhD in Environmental Microbiology, and prior to that she studied Environmental Health Sciences for her Master and Bachelor degrees. Her work focuses on tracking, isolating and mitigating human pathogens in the environment. Her primary research interest include discovering environmental conditions that influence viral and bacterial transmission and infection dynamics; novel antimicrobial technologies; microbial water quality; infectious disease ecology; surrogate organism investigation and validation; rapid detection for viral pathogens; and, environmental isolation of emerging infectious diseases.

Research interests

Currently she is working under the ARC ITTC for Fresh Produce Safety in water-related research. Hannah supervises HDR and honour’s students in the topics of microbial ecology and surveillance in irrigation water and sediment; pathogen survival in water under various model circumstances; tracking pathogen spread via surrogates; and, antimicrobial testing. She also lectures in VIRO3X01, and other teaching interests include infectious disease ecology, environmental health, bacterial pathogenesis and human/zoonotic parasitology.”
