Biographical details

Associate Professor Merran Govendir teaches veterinary pharmacology to Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students. She teaches the basics of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics so that her students know how to administer medicines to their animal patients, safely. Her teaching uses many ‘real world’ examples, many of which come from her pharmacological research projects.

Dr Govendir runs the Veterinary Pharmacology Laboratory at the Sydney School of Veterinary Science. This is one of the few laboratories in Australasia that develops and validates drug assays to measure medicine concentrations in the biological tissues of animals. She also conducts research in antimicrobial susceptibility testing and promotes antimicrobial stewardship.

Current research projects include investigating the pharmacokinetic profiles of several non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in various species to improve dosages so that they have a better therapeutic effect. Dr Govendir and her team are well known for their work to improve the efficacy of medicines for koalas and the team are currently investigating better treatments for chlamydial disease in koalas. She is also looking at the pharmacology of several analgesics for Australian marsupials. She has been primary supervisor for six completed PhD candidates and two completed research masters students. She is currently supervising two PhD candidatures and two Research Masters projects and numerous DVM students’ research projects.

She has numerous research collaborations with Sydney School of Veterinary Science colleagues and has external collaborations with Dr Larry Vogelnest, Senior Veterinarian at Taronga Zoo, NSW and Dr Benn Bryant, Senior Veterinarian at Western Plains Zoo NSW as well as with the Koala Hospital at Port Macquarie, NSW, and Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, Beerwah, Qld.

Dr Govendir has been the Associate Editor of the Veterinary Quarterly since 2014 and member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics since 2017.
