Biographical details

Dr Bennett is a graduate of the University of Melbourne. After time in general practice he completed residency training in small animal medicine in 1999 and then joined the faculty of Purdue University in Indiana where he was trained in oncology. He is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (Canine Medicine) and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology, Small Animal Internal Medicine).

Since moving to Sydney in 2012 he has developed collaborations with researchers at the Kolling Institute, Sydney School of Medicine and the Westmead Institute of Medical Research. Peter is currently the Director of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital Sydney.

External leadership roles include Assistant Chief Examiner (Training and Credentials) for the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists, Associate Editor for the Australian Veterinary Journal and is a member of the editorial board for the Veterinary Sciences journal.

Peter continues to provide continuing education, primarily in Oncology, both nationally and internationally. He is the Postgraduate Director of the Clinical Residency program.

Lymphoma in dogs and cats.

Cancer immunotherapy.

Improving quality of life and access to advanced treatments for small animal cancer patients.

Teaching and supervision

DVM2 VETS6204 (Principles of Animal Disease A) in cancer development.

DVM3 VETS6209 (Small Animal Practice B) in oncology and haematology and VETS6313 (Research and Enquiry) mentoring students in their research projects.

DVM4 VETS6403 (Small Animal Clinics C) in oncology and small animal medicine

Clinical teaching of Masters students in the clinical residency program in oncology and small animal medicine. Auxillary supervisor for PhD students in areas associated with oncology.

Current projects

Lymphoma demographics and clinical outcomes in Australian dogs and cats.

Investigation of the use of microRNA profiles as prognostic markers in canine lymphoma.

Autologous vaccine in cancer bearing patients.

Development of Chimeric Antigen Receptor T cells (CAR T cells) for treatment of canine lymphoma.

Associations

Peter is a member of a consensus statement committee for the American College on Veterinary Internal Medicine on the topic of Chemotherapy Safety and the lymphoma diagnosis and classification group of the Oncology-Pathology Working group of the Veterinary Cancer Society.

Peter is a member of the Australian Veterinary Association, Australian Small Animal Veterinarians, Veterinary Cancer Society, and the European Society of Veterinary Oncology. He is a Fellow of ANZCVS and a diplomate of ACVIM.
