Dr Sabin Zahirovic
Sabin is a Robinson Fellow, and DECRA Fellow 2021-2024, in the School of Geosciences. He completed his PhD (University of Sydney) in 2015 titled “Post-Pangea global plate kinematics and geodynamic implications for Southeast Asia”. Sabin has been at the School of Geosciences since December 2008, working in various roles as a Research Assistant, Lab Demonstrator, Tutor and Associate Lecturer at junior, intermediate and senior undergraduate levels. Sabin was appointed to the Deep Carbon Observatory's Executive Committee in mid 2019, and has been on the GSA NSW committee as talk organiser since 2017.
Sabin’s research has focussed on the plate-mantle system, especially in the Tethyan tectonic domain, including the India-Eurasia collision, Southeast Asian tectonics, the NW Australian Shelf and New Guinea. Sabin also has ongoing interests in deep-time plate reconstructions and paleogeography, with a recent focus on the links between plate tectonics and the planetary deep carbon cycle.
Currently Sabin is supervising one PhD student and several research assistants within the EarthByte Group, and leads the New Guinea- stream of the 5-year Basin GENESIS Hub project funded by the Australian Research Council and industry partners.
