Biographical details

In 2014, my love of chemistry lead me to obtain a PhD focused in Physical Organic Chemistry. It was during this that I came to understand that my true vocation was actually the teaching and mentoring experiences I undertook, rather than the bench-work I achieved. Hence, in 2016, I leapt at the opportunity to undertake a second PhD in Chemical Education. This resulted in me developing a unique dual understanding of both chemistry and the best means to teach it (and, in turn, how to research those teaching changes).

After several years of investigating new industry-inspired teaching laboratories, I will continue to consider the best ways to utilise student laboratory time at the University of Sydney. I hope to continue to take advantage of my unique chemistry and chemical education experience to continue to also develop learning materials for undergraduate students (typically chemistry) whilst considering the best means to undertake assessment. Lastly, I will explore the level of communication between academic staff and measure it’s influence on student learning outcomes.

I am interested in a range of topics, such as:

1) The use of context- and inquiry-based activities in undergraduate laboratories.

2) The effect of the physical environment on student engagement and performance in undergraduate laboratories.

3) The means of assessment in undergraduate laboratories.

4) The training, recruitment and support of demonstrators in undergraduate laboratories.

5) The ability of staff to accurately predict student performance on exams.

6) The communication between staff with regards to their ongoing teaching experiences/classes and how this affects student learning.
