Research interests

Laboratory learning, use of VR, electronic assessment, non-algorithmic assessment questions, and academic communication/colloboration.

Current projects

I am interested in a range of topics, such as:

1) The use of context- and inquiry-based activities in undergraduate laboratories.

2) The effect of the physical environment on student engagement and performance in undergraduate laboratories.

3) The means of assessment in undergraduate laboratories.

4) The training, recruitment and support of demonstrators in undergraduate laboratories.

5) The ability of staff to accurately predict student performance on exams.

6) The ability of staff to create valid exams and assessments that correctly differentiate between students’ knowledge and ability.

7) The communication between staff with regards to their ongoing teaching experiences/classes and how this affects student learning.

8) The use of ‘creative exercises’ and problem-based learning to encourage student learning beyond rote memorisation.

9) The use of Virtual Reality (VR) in aiding in student learning and visualization of chemistry concepts.
