Biographical details

I am a Lecturer in Geology in the School of Geosciences. I hold an undergraduate degree in Geology from the University of Patras in Greece, and I received my PhD from the same institution in 2010, working on the tectonic evolution of high-pressure metamorphic rocks of south Aegean region (Greece). Following my PhD, I was involved in research projects at the University of Patras focusing on the tectonic evolution of the northern Gondwana margin. From 2013 to 2017, I held various postdoctoral research positions in US and European institutions working on the rheology of continental and oceanic lithosphere studying rocks from USA, Mexico, New Caledonia, Oman, Antarctica, Greece, and Turkey. Starting in 2013 at Boston College (US), I worked on a NSF-funded research project looking into mantle rheology and heterogeneity beneath west Antarctica. In 2014, I was awarded a 3-year European Union Postdoctoral Fellowship (Marie Curie IOF) during which I was a researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (US) and Utrecht University (Netherlands) working on the problem of mantle rheology in strike-slip plate boundaries. In 2017, I returned at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a co-Principal Investigator on a NSF-funded research project on the rheological structure of the North Anatolian fault zone (Turkey). In January 2018, I commenced a continuing Lecturer position in Geology at the University of Sydney.

Research interests

My research interests are in the field of structural geology and tectonics. In particular, I am interested in the links between lithospheric rheology and plate tectonics. I am also interested in the long-term and transient deformation in strike-slip plate boundaries, formation and evolution of the oceanic lithosphere, tectonic evolution of metamorphic terranes, as well as regional tectonics of eastern Mediterranean and southwest Pacific.

In my research, I use a multidisciplinary approach combining structural geology with petrology, geochemistry, and geochronology. I combine field-based structural analysis techniques with results from various microanalytical techniques, such Scanning Electron Microscopy-based Electron BackScatter Diffraction (SEM-EBSD), X-ray Computed Tomography (XRCT), Electron Probe MicroAnalysis (EPMA), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR).
