Learning in Canvas and Blackboard

Canvas and Blackboard are the University’s online learning platforms, where you will find information and resources for your units of study.

Overview

Canvas is the University’s new online learning space. It will replace Blackboard, the existing Learning Management System (LMS), during 2018. Canvas will allow you to engage in interactive and collaborative online learning, and can be accessed on your mobile device.

Who will be using Canvas?

  • Postgraduate students: your units of study will be in Canvas.
  • Undergraduate first year students: your 1000-level units will be in Canvas.
  • Undergraduate second, third or fourth year students: your 2000+ level units may be in Blackboard or Canvas.

What you’ll find in Canvas

In Canvas, you can access learning material for each unit of study you are enrolled in, such as your unit of study outline and coordinator contact details. Each unit will have its own site that will typically include:

  • learning resources such as lecture notes and recordings, interactive videos, links to readings and articles
  • communication tools such as announcements and discussions
  • activities including quizzes
  • assignment submission
  • a calendar where you can view and download important course dates, such as assignment submission dates.

Information on how to navigate and use Canvas is available in our Student Canvas Guide. The guide covers important features, FAQs from students and answers to common IT issues related to using Canvas.

Unit of study coordinators are responsible for managing the content on their site. For unit-specific questions or feedback, (such as learning resources, assessments classes, issues with study), contact your unit coordinator.

For IT-related questions (such as issues using Canvas or log in problems), visit our Student Canvas Guide or call the ICT Service Desk on 1800 SYD UNI (1800 793 864) option 3 for ICT.
