English language requirements

How to demonstrate your proficiency in English
Depending on your educational background and country of origin, you may need to provide evidence of your English proficiency to be able to study with us.

Our courses require proficiency in English so that you can cope with lectures, tutorials, assignments and examinations.

Your first language is English

If English is your first language, you need to have citizenship or permanent long-term residency (minimum ten years) and completed secondary or higher education (tertiary) studies in an English-speaking country recognised by the University (see country list below).

Some variations apply to specific degrees which have external registration/accreditation requirements. Refer to the relevant Postgraduate or Undergraduate sections for more information.

Your first language is not English

If English is not your first language, you will need to provide proof of your English proficiency before you can commence your studies at the University.

You can do this by demonstrating that you have completed specific secondary or tertiary qualifications, by taking an English language skills test, or by completing a relevant English language course at the University’s Centre for English Teaching.

English language skills tests we accept:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic (IELTS One Skill Retake together with an original IELTS test)^
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language: internet-based (TOEFL iBT)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic
  • Cambridge English C1 Advanced (formerly CAE) and Cambridge English C2 Proficiency (formerly CPE)*

To convert scores between these English proficiency tests, use our concordance table (pdf, 139KB). English test scores vary by course, check the English test score required on the course page.

^IELTS One Skill Retake is assessed alongside a standard IELTS test. The 2 year validity applies to the original test, not the date of the IELTS One Skill Retake test.

*For some degrees, this English proficiency test may not be accepted due to specific external registration/accreditation requirements. Check the course page for details.

Some courses with external registration/accreditation requirements may have separate or additional English requirements to those of the University’s outlined on this page. For details, visit the course pages for nursing (pre-registration), clinical dentistry and clinical psychology.
