Grad robes get a 21st century rethink

Kanye West to redesign University academic garb

An unexpected collaboration between internationally acclaimed hip hop artist Kanye West and the University of Sydney will see next year’s graduates don a radical new academic ensemble.

The traditional undergraduate black gowns have not changed for over 160 years, prompting a rethink for what constitutes 21st century graduand chic.

Mr West is keeping the designs a closely-guarded secret, but part of the early concepts included crumpled velvets, streaks of gold foil and fluro pom-poms on the tradtional felt motar board.

A University spokesperson said “this will be the greatest academic gown collaboration of all time… if it were true. April Fools !"
