The University has introduced mathematics course prerequisites for some courses from 2019 to help students thrive in their science, technology, engineering and mathematics related degrees and prepare them to tackle future career challenges.
The mathematics prerequisites apply to:
It also applies to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants who apply through the Cadigal Scheme. An Associate Dean may admit an applicant under the Cadigal Scheme who has not achieved band 4 in Mathematics, if satisfied that the student meets the standards by demonstrating the capacity to succeed in coursework at a university level; and subject to a requirement that they enrol in and successfully complete an approved mathematics prerequisite course in their first year of study or where required, in a subsequent attempt.
The mathematics prerequisites don’t apply to:
The mathematics prerequisites apply to:
as well as:
Students need to achieve a Band 4 in the HSC Mathematics* (not Mathematics General) or similar result in equivalent interstate year 12, IB or GCE A Level subjects or other Year 12 qualifications, to be eligible for admission to a range of courses, including economics, commerce, computing, engineering and IT, medicine, psychology, pharmacy, veterinary science and science.
*The subject requirement refers to Mathematics (not Mathematics General or Mathematics Standard), or Mathematics Advanced which will be first examined in the NSW HSC in 2020.
If you do not meet the mathematic prerequisite, consider the options below.
The Mathematics Massive Open Online Course (Introduction to Calculus MOOC) and post-MOOC examination is not intended for students who have not undertaken any studies in mathematics and is not a substitute to studying the required mathematics subjects in high school. The post-MOOC examination will be available prior to each University intake for students who are at a standard to successfully complete the requirements of the Mathematics MOOC and post-MOOC examination. Students who are successful in the post-MOOC examination will be eligible for an offer of admission to courses with the maths prerequisite if they also meet the ATAR (or equivalent) and other applicable admission criteria.
You may consider this option to initially enrol in a course without the maths prerequisite and apply to transfer after completing one year of full-time study which includes the required studies in mathematics (as specified by the University). Admission to a course with the maths prerequisite is based on the better of students’ ATAR (or equivalent) or performance in at least one year of higher education study; and completion of an accepted mathematics unit at university (refer to table below).
|Unit of study||For what course?|
|MATH1111 introduction to Calculus*||All award courses subject to Maths standards|
|ECON1003 Quantitative Methods in Economics||Bachelor of Economics
Bachelor of Economics/Bachelor of Advanced studies
|ENVX1002 Introduction to Statistical Methods||Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Agriculture)
Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Animal and Veterinary Bioscience)
Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Food and Agribusiness)
Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Taronga Wildlife Conservation)
|Equivalent Unit from another university||As assessed by the University|
*MATH1111 represents the minimum standard for an acceptable mathematics subject that meets the maths prerequisite. Mathematics subjects taken at a higher level will also be considered to meet the maths prerequisite.
