The Sydney Southeast Asia Centre at the University of Sydney is delighted to host the inaugural Sydney Southeast Asia Research Innovation Symposium.

Venue: Refectory, Holme Building, University of Sydney
This flagship event will showcase the work of our members across Southeast Asia, and bring together the wider University community to catalyse new research engagement in the region.
The Symposium will feature a Keynote address by Nicholas Moore AO, Special Envoy for Southeast Asia and lead author of Invested: Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040, focusing on what Australia’s strategy for Southeast Asia means for research and innovation.
The program will also include sessions on:
- Research that changes lives: Snapshots of our impact in Southeast Asia
- Becoming outstanding partners: Enhancing our academic engagement in Southeast Asia
- Working in the region together: The Sydney Southeast Asia Centre’s Country Academic Networks
The Symposium will conclude with our Ignition grant finalists presenting their research funding pitch, with the winners announced on the day.
Lunch and afternoon tea will be provided.
The Symposium will be preceded by a Postgraduate Workshop for University of Sydney students, and followed by networking drinks. Registration is essential.

Join us for a Sydney Southeast Asia Centre (SSEAC) Postgraduate Workshop aimed at supporting higher degree by research students to develop collaborative research projects and partnerships in Southeast Asia.
This workshop is designed to get you thinking about post-submission research opportunities and to lay the groundwork for future collaborations.
With expert guidance from Dr Natali Pearson (SSEAC Curriculum Coordinator) and Ms Emily Nabong (SSEAC Postgraduate Representative), this intensive and interactive session will challenge you to think creatively about working across disciplines to design impactful, feasible and fundable post-PhD collaborative research projects.
Participants will have the opportunity to vote on the most promising idea, with prizes for the most highly ranked.
Following the conclusion of PG Workshop, participants are strongly encouraged to attend the Sydney Southeast Asia Research Innovation Symposium (registration essential), where they will have the opportunity to hear from emerging and established Southeast Asia-focused researchers and further develop their collaborative networks across the University.
