Politics in action: Updates from Southeast Asia

Political updates from across Southeast Asia

Sydney Southeast Asia Centre’s annual Politics in Action Forum brought political updates from Southeast Asia to researchers and practitioners from across the disciplines and beyond.

Invited experts provided an analysis of the political situation in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and the Philippines and discussed the broader implications of events in these countries for our region. Drawing upon expertise from around the world, these presentations provided up-to-date with developments in Southeast Asia.

This event was open to academics and non-academics and interested members of the public were encouraged to attend.

In 2018, the forum focused on:

  • Cambodia
  • Indonesia
  • Laos
  • Malaysia
  • Myanmar
  • Philippines

Our exciting line-up of speakers confirmed for the day were:

  • Professor Garry Rodan (Murdoch University)
  • Associate Professor Bridget Welsh (John Cabot University, Italy)
  • Dr Su Mon Thazin Aung (Institute of Strategy and Policy, Myanmar)
  • Dr Keith Barney (Australian National University)
  • Dr Melissa Crouch (University of New South Wales)
  • Dr Jayeel Serrano Cornelio (Ateneo de Manila University)
  • Dr Lee Morgenbesser  (Griffith University)
  • Dr Charlotte Setijadi (Institute for Southeast Asia Studies- Yusof Ishak Institute, Singapore)

The day began with remarks from Professor Garry Rodan, who presented an overview of political trends and emerging patterns in the region.

Each of our country-specialists spoke for 20 minutes, allowing 10 minutes for audience questions, debate and discussion. Each of our experts were instructed to pitch their talk to an interested, but not necessarily academic, audience so the talks were able to be enjoyed by a diverse audience.

Our event wrapped up with comments from Dr Melissa Crouch, who reflected on the day’s proceedings and gave the audience some key take-away messages from the day.
