Images have the capacity to both reflect and shape human society. This unit examines the value and use of images in the archaeological context, focusing particularly on the challenges of viewing and interpreting imagery created by cultures removed from our own in time and space.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Demonstrate a detailed understanding of iconographic interpretation, analysis and theory and the ability to collate, analyse and interpret iconographic material.
  • LO2. Demonstrate particular expertise in the iconography of a chosen topic.
  • LO3. Read and critically evaluate relevant scholarship.
  • LO4. Demonstrate the ability to communicate complex ideas in both written and spoken English.
  • LO5. Understand how to conduct independent research in archaeology
