This unit introduces cultures of Asia across time, from the Ramayana to K-Pop. The curriculum aims to provide essential knowledge and skills necessary for more detailed study of Asia, including through laying the groundwork for comparative investigation of trans-Asian phenomena. Topics and themes include: religion, ritual, and philosophy; sacred kings and capitals; hierarchy and social order; family, kinship and gender systems; high art, literature and popular culture. This unit will demonstrate how deep cultural trends relate to contemporary Asian cultures.
