AVBS2007: Animal Structure and Function

Semester 1, 2022 [Normal day] - Remote

Animals kept for food and companionship, are diverse and beautifully complex. In this Unit, you will develop an understanding of the structure and function of domestic animals with an emphasis on the systems relevant to animal scientists. The unit begins with the anatomy and physiology of domestic animals cell and basic tissue structure and an overview of homeostatic control systems. This is followed by a more in-depth study of the other body systems. An understanding of the normal functioning of these systems allows identification of how these systems can be influenced by animal management and the animals' environment. At the completion of this unit you will develop; a rich understanding of the relationships between body systems and structure, broad skills of critical thinking and communication, appreciating the links between structure and function and their relevance to abnormal function and animal disease that will be further developed in applied studies in animal nutrition, animal behaviour, welfare and ethics and animal reproduction. In this unit, there is a risk of exposure to zoonotic pathogens. Vaccination against Q fever is a requirement to attend anatomy practical classes on campus. In exceptional circumstances where this is not practical, specific Personal Protective Equipment must be utilised.

Assessment summary

  • Online Quizzes: Four online quizzes will become available throughout the semester. Each quiz contains 10 questions and is worth 2.5 marks. Announcements will be made on Canvas when quizzes are available.
  • Individual Assignment: The individual assignment will require you to research current literature and write a brief essay on a topic provided during the semester.
  • Group Assignment: The group assignment will involve small groups of three or four students presenting an assignment
  • In class exam: The first in class exam will cover all material from the Introdution Module, Musculoskeletal Module, and Digestion Module.
  • Final Exam: The final in class exam will concentrate on material form weeks 6 to 13 but may also cover material delivered earlier in the unit.

All assessment tasks in this unit are compulsory (excl. Online Quizzes) and to pass this unit of study, a student must attempt all assessment tasks. A failure to submit a compulsory assessment task will result in an Absent Fail (AF) for this unit.

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

You may only use generative AI and automated writing tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator. If you do use these tools, you must acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section. The assessment instructions or unit outline will give guidance of the types of tools that are permitted and how the tools should be used.

Your final submitted work must be your own, original work. You must acknowledge any use of generative AI tools that have been used in the assessment, and any material that forms part of your submission must be appropriately referenced. The unapproved use of these tools or unacknowledged use will be considered a breach of the Academic Integrity Policy and penalties may apply.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

While students are encouraged to attend all tutorials and practical classes, attendance is not compulsory.

To pass this unit of study, a student must attempt all assessment tasks (excl. online quizzes).

 

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

Learning outcomes are what students know, understand and are able to do on completion of a unit of study. They are aligned with the University's graduate qualities and are assessed as part of the curriculum.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Describe musculoskeletal, neuroanatomy, digestive, immune, cardiovascular, respiratory, reproduction and urinary systems in domestic animals.
  • LO2. Explain and describe anatomy using appropriate anatomical terminology.
  • LO3. Describe motility and control within the digestive tract of monogastric and ruminant species.
  • LO4. Compare enzymatic and fermentative digestion.
  • LO5. Describe animal management practices which meet the physiological needs of animals (considering the animal’s sensory structures, central processing, autonomic and motor responses).
  • LO6. Evaluate the contribution of the integument, digestive and urogenital systems to the maintenance of homeostasis.
  • LO7. Discuss the contribution of the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory and musculoskeletal systems to the maintenance of internal homeostasis.
  • LO8. Describe the basic endocrine control of the reproductive system and the important events leading to and during pregnancy.
  • LO9. Work cooperatively as part of a group and communicate results in written and oral form to various audiences including peers, disciplinary experts and lay-people.
  • LO10. Analyse applied animal physiology research articles and describe the findings in an appropriate written form. (i.e. scientific report).

This section outlines changes made to this unit following staff and student reviews.

Based on student feedback: - changes have been made to the content and structure of lectures, tutorials and practical classes - refinements have been made to the newly developed individual assignment and the detailed marking rubric is now available on Canvas. - additional formative quizzes, including a mock intra-semester test have been developed.

Students have the opportunity to undertake a guided dissection during the practical class on the Musculoskeletal System.

Interested students need to purchase a dissection kit.

Dissection kits can be purchased in the University shop in the Wentworth Building, just make sure it has the correct scalpel handle size – No 4, as the blades we provide (size 24) won't fit otherwise.

 

 

Work, health and safety

Q-fever vaccination and completion of the Canvas module “Zoonosis Awareness” is compulsory.

We are governed by the Work Health and Safety Act 2011, Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 and Codes of Practice. Penalties for non-compliance have increased. Everyone has a responsibility for health and safety at work. The University’s Work Health and Safety policy explains the responsibilities and expectations of workers and others, and the procedures for managing WHS risks associated with University activities.

General Laboratory Safety Rules

  • No eating or drinking is allowed in any laboratory under any circumstances
  • A laboratory coat, gloves, face masks and closed-toe shoes are mandatory
  • Follow safety instructions in your manual and posted in laboratories
  • In case of fire, follow instructions posted outside the laboratory door
  • First aid kits, eye wash and fire extinguishers are located in or immediately outside each laboratory
  • As a precautionary measure, it is recommended that you have a current tetanus immunisation. This can be obtained from University Health Service: unihealth.usyd.edu.au/
