BIOS3063: Project Design and Management

2021 unit information

This unit of study examines the principles and factors involved in the design and management of services, programs, and projects. Students will develop skills in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating projects as well as be given an introduction to financial management. This is an introductory level that aims to develop generic skills relevant to project management. It is not a specialist project management unit. Students who achieve a pass have a basic working knowledge of project management. Students who achieve higher grades are better able to integrate various aspects of the unit, and to apply their knowledge to solve problems.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Describe the advantages of using the "project management" approach to the design and implementation of projects.
  • LO2. Explain the role of the scope statement in a project plan, and describe how the scope statement is developed.
  • LO3. Create a comprehensive scope statement for a project including scope exclusions, constraints, assumptions and risks.
  • LO4. Describe the role of the work breakdown structure, how a work breakdown structure is created, and create a comprehensive work breakdown structure for a project.
  • LO5. Explain how a comprehensive time management plan is developed. Use techniques such as PERT diagrams and Gantt charts to illustrate a project schedule. Explain the advantages of forward and backward pass is in situations in which they are used.Produce a comprehensive Time Management plan for a project.
  • LO6. Explain how comprehensive budget is developed. Differentiate between fixed and variable costs. Produce a comprehensive budget for a project.
  • LO7. Explain the importance of project risks, how they relate to assumptions, how they are identified, and the various strategies that can be used to manage them. Produce a comprehensive risk management plan for a project including a risk matrix.
  • LO8. Explain the importance of quality management in a program including the principles of quality planning management and assessment. Produce a comprehensive quality management plan for a project.
  • LO9. Explain the principles of teamwork and leadership and how they can be applied to managing projects.
