This English option unit provides students with an overview of some key principles for understanding and teaching about digital literacy and digital media in the K-6 classroom . Digital media (including multimodal texts, movies, video and interactive media) is a core aspect of the English curriculum as well as being part of the larger social and cultural experiences for most primary school students. By considering the social and cultural construction of literacy in terms of multiliteracies, new literacies and multimodality, the unit will then contextualise the development of participants' technical skills using various software. The unit will develop participants' skills in using learning design and digital multimedia software, including social media, combined with the development of a set a digital resources. Issues of literacy skills, resource use, pedagogy, classroom activities and cross curriculum applications will also be considered.
