EDUP3009: Science and Technology 1

Semester 2, 2020 [Normal day] - Camperdown/Darlington, Sydney

Through applying the learning processes of Working Technologically, this unit focuses on developing children's interest and skills in understanding and using technology. In particular, it considers design as a creative process, founded on an understanding of the natural and physical world, which promotes science conceptual understanding. Teaching of these learning processes includes emphasis on the content strands: Built Environments, Information, Products and Material World. The unit incorporates the curriculum priority areas: classroom management and information and communication technologies. Students will engage in evaluation and selection / development of activities and resources relevant to the teaching of science and technology in the primary school (K-6) classroom.

Assessment summary

  • Critical review of a STEM-based unit of work: You will be provided with access to 6 STEM-based Units of Work, from the NESA Support Material. You are to select ONE of these units and critically evaluate its use and application as a teaching and learning tool within the classroom.
  • Presentation – development of a design brief: You will be testing and evaluating example design tasks and gaining experience in working with design briefs. Select a task (from Canvas) as the stimulus to develop a design brief for a learning experience that will aid primary students to develop. Share your lesson idea with peers by presenting the design brief and sample product justifying the elements of the task that will enhance students’ development of skills and knowledge and understanding of science and technology concepts. Provide a handout using the template provided for use by teacher colleagues.
  • Creative work – team project: You will be working in a team to complete a design task by producing a physical output using knowledge, understanding of and skills in the applying the processes of Working Technologicially that have developed during this unit of study.

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Studiosity is permitted for postgraduate units unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Attendance and class requirements

Attendance: The Sydney School of Education and Social Work requires attendance of at least 90 percent of all seminars, workshops or lectures. Where a student is unable to attend at the required rate evidence of illness or misadventure may be required and the student may be required to undertake extra work. Students should discuss the circumstances of their absence(s) with the co-ordinator of the unit of study. Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 4 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 80-100 hours of student effort in total.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

Site visit guidelines

If you are undertaking professional experience/field education placement as part of your enrolment in this unit of study, please assess your specific needs and requirements for the safe and successful completion of an external placement within a host organisation.
