GCST5003: Engaged Cultural Research

2022 unit information

This unit focuses on the skills needed for undertaking engaged research in cultural studies, gender studies and aligned disciplines. It focuses on partnering with communities to undertake research and the application of research skills beyond exclusively academic contexts. Workshops cover: adapting your research cv for different contexts; working within the cultural sector and with community groups and NGOs; research translation and writing for broader audiences; and writing funding applications in support of cultural and community activities and research.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. To pursue engaged cultural research and apply their academic, communicative and collaborative skills into a diverse range of contexts.
  • LO2. To exercise integrity, confidence and resilience in the academic research landscape as it intersects with the cultural sector, policy-making, non-government organizations and community groups.
  • LO3. To be professionally and socially responsible and make a positive contribution to society, and to recognise and promote the implications of own research in a broader societal context
  • LO4. To display high levels of cultural competence and embody best practice with regard to cultural competence in research.
