Twentieth-century Germany was pulled between democracy and dictatorship. After WW1, the Weimar Republic saw a flourishing of democracy, but political and economic problems led to its collapse. The Third Reich was the darkest period in the German-speaking world, but after 1945, Nazis were rehabilitated in the west and dictatorship continued in the east. In this unit, we examine the dynamics of dictatorship and democracy in the German-speaking world by analysing cultural artefacts produced in German. Students will enhance their German language skills with in-depth exercises that engage the major developments of twentieth-century Germany.
