This capstone unit of study will assist students in developing high level diagnostic, management and interpersonal skills relevant to the practice of internal medicine. The majority of the unit will take place over a series of evening sessions across the semester. The Capstone will be delivered in 3 parts. Part 1 will focus on clinical skills, focussing on physical examination and long case skills critical (optional component). Part 2 will focus on skills of the effective physician, including evidence-based practice, ethics and career development. Part 3 will be dedicated to cutting-edge updates and themes in internal medicine, transition to practice and leadership. Students will develop a research proposal, write a case report and deliver a short presentation on an innovation in internal medicine. During the three parts, senior clinicians will provide insights into clinical decision making, appropriate use of investigative modalities and patient centred management. Students will present their research proposals and cases in small group discussions with colleagues, facilitated by senior clinicians.
