Contemporary Magazine Publishing explores practical and theoretical aspects of magazine culture, from consumer magazines to business-to-business and branded publications. Students work in small groups to conceive, plan, write and design a small ‘dummy’ (prototype) magazine that follows magazine design and flow principles. The unit emphasises writing, editing and design rather than marketing, although students will learn the importance of producing a magazine for the commercial media landscape, including the role of media kits, social media, digital marketing and branded extensions.
