This unit covers a range of clinical conditions likely to be encountered by clinicians working in both primary health care settings such as general practice and general paediatric inpatient and outpatient settings Through clinical scenarios students will consider the assessment diagnosis and management of challenging but common and important clinical presentations of childhood and adolescence

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Analyze, approach and recognise growth failure in children and be able to differentiate different patterns and causes
  • LO2. Develop a step wise clinical approach to a child presenting with cough and demonstrate understanding of common underlying conditions
  • LO3. Discuss illustrative cases to understand differentiation and approach to various sleep disorders in children and adolescents
  • LO4. Learn and understand clinical and psychosocial aspects related to diagnosis and management of childhood enuresis
  • LO5. Recognise simple and complex presentations that indicate children at risk of harm and learn a reporting and management approach by applying this to interactive cases
  • LO6. Recognise and discuss key principles of immunisation related to adverse events and special populations
  • LO7. Develop an approach to assessment and management of clinical, developmental and psychosocial aspects of common ear disease in children and in particular Aboriginal children
  • LO8. Apply in depth understanding of nutritional requirements for normal growth to identify children at risk of nutrient deficiency
  • LO9. Apply in depth understanding of principles of immunisation to management of special populations
