In this unit religion is the lens to examine the modern secular and civil condition. This will include the faith structures that lie behind the rise of the nation state, democracy, political utopias and such ideals or myths that have driven dominant models of society. This analysis will also examine secular space not only as a realm of ultimate and national concern but also as a site for religious speculation. Theories about charisma, apocalypticism and conversion will be examined in consideration of how they have utilised in the service of political and social ideologies.
